Second time: the ending to play on the second pass.
Printed at the start of the second-ending bracket (2ª volta, 2da, or 2.) over the bars played on the repeat in place of the first ending; its bracket is often left open on the right when the music runs straight on.
Abbreviations: 2da volta, 2da, 2ª volta
Also spelled: 2a volta
The second ending usually carries the closing cadence or the transition onward. Make the joins work both ways: the bar before the brackets must lead smoothly into each ending, and the second must connect to what follows. In parts, keep both endings on one line where possible so the player sees the alternative at once.
Seconda volta is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
