First time: the ending to play on the first pass.
Printed at the start of the first-ending bracket (1ª volta, 1ma, or just 1.) over the bars played before the repeat; on the repeat, the second ending replaces them. The bracket’s length shows the scope, and it appears above the top staff of the score and in every part.
Abbreviations: 1ma volta, 1ma, 1ª volta
Also spelled: 1a volta
Use first and second endings when only the close of a repeated section differs — the first leads back to the start, the second continues or ends. Keep endings short; if they differ for more than a few bars, write the section out. Numbered endings can be combined (1.–3., 4.) for several passes, common in strophic songs.
Prima volta is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
