Switch to another instrument, tuning or pedal setting.
Printed over a part during rests to warn of an instrument switch (change to piccolo), a timpani retuning (change F♯ to G) or a harp pedal change; the new instrument or tuning applies from the next entry. The Italian muta (muta in) is the standard equivalent.
Also spelled: change
Allow enough time: an instrument change needs several seconds, a timpani retuning several bars of rest and quiet surroundings. Write the instruction at the start of the rests so the player can prepare, and print the new instrument’s name at the entry. For harp, plan pedal changes against the notes being played.
Holst, The Planets, “Uranus, the Magician”, piccolo 2, m. 222: “(Picc. II change to Bass Fl.)” is printed at the Lento, the bar after the organ’s ffff glissando.
Change to is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
