Pick up another instrument for the section that follows.
Printed over a part during rests (take piccolo, take mute, Fl. 2 takes Picc.) to tell a player to pick up an instrument or device for the next entry; it applies from that entry until another take-instruction.
Also spelled: takes
Use it for doublings within a section and for equipment changes such as mutes or beaters. Give the instruction early in the rest, and print the instrument name at the new entry so the player knows what to read. Check doubling plans against the player’s time: nobody can take a new instrument while still playing the old one.
Take is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
