Second time: the ending for the second pass.
Printed over the second-ending bracket (often just 2. or 2. Mal) or in a direction that applies only on the repeat. It replaces the first ending or first-time instruction on the second pass.
Also spelled: 2. Mal
Use second-time instructions to vary a repeat without writing it out — louder, softer, with an added instrument, or with a different ending. Make sure the bracket clearly shows where the second ending starts and stops, and where the music continues afterwards.
Zweites Mal is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
