For two: both players of the pair play the line.
Printed over a shared wind or brass staff, sometimes with a period (“zu 2.”), where both players of the pair play the line in unison. It lasts until a single player is indicated (1., I., Solo) or the parts split into two lines.
The German form of a 2: both players double the line, for weight and security in loud passages or to strengthen a melody. Unison doubling in winds thickens the tone more than it raises volume, and slightly blurs intonation at soft dynamics. Mark which player continues when the doubling ends; leaving it implied invites both to carry on.
Zu 2 is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
