Tempo, pace (literally "time-measure").
Printed alone (Zeitmass) after a rit. or pause to restore the tempo, or in compounds — Voriges Zeitmass, wieder im Zeitmass, Hauptzeitmass. As a bare word it works like a tempo; older editions spell it Zeitmass.
Also spelled: Zeitmass
The purist German word for tempo, favoured by Wolf, Strauss and Mahler when avoiding Italian. Wieder im Zeitmass restores the tempo after a change; Voriges Zeitmass refers to the tempo just before a contrasting section. Choose the compound that names the reference tempo you mean.
Wolf, Mörike-Lieder, “Auf einer Wanderung”, m. 91: “Zeitmass” follows a rit. in the bar before, the bare word restoring the tempo as a tempo would.
Zeitmaß is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
