Next in order ("cresc., then dim.").
Sequences two directions inside one printed phrase — cresc., then dim.; slower, then in time — so that the second follows once the first has run its course. It sits where the first direction belongs and carries no fixed timing of its own; the Italian poi does the same job.
Use it to script a short sequence without placing two markings at exact bars: cresc., then dim. asks for a single swell, shaped by the player. It leaves the turning point open, so where timing matters, print the second direction at its own bar instead. Two steps are clear; longer chains are better written out.
