Leaping; a bouncing bow stroke where the bow bounces off the string.
Printed above the string staff as saltando or salt., at the passage of short notes it governs. It holds until another bowing indication or a change of material.
Abbreviations: salt.
A bounced stroke in which the bow’s own spring does the work — close to spiccato, and in some usage the same as ricochet. It suits rapid, light repeated notes at soft to moderate dynamics, played in the middle of the bow. It loses its bounce at slow tempi and very loud dynamics, so do not ask for it there.
Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 6 in B minor (“Pathétique”), first movement, first violins, m. 42: “saltando” at pp, with “unis.” in the same bar.
Saltando is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
