Desk (stand), shared by two string players; "1 Pult" is one desk.
Printed over a string part to say how many desks play (“1. Pult”, “nur 2 Pulte”) or which desks take which line in a divisi; the plural is Pulte. It lasts until the full section is restored (alle, tutti).
Also spelled: Pulte
Desk indications let you scale a string section without rewriting: a single desk is two players, intimate and soloistic but warmer than a true solo. Dividing by desks (pultweise) keeps stand partners together and is easier to organise than divisi within each desk. Always mark the return to the full section.
Pult is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
