Divided: the section splits into separate parts.
Printed over a string part, often abbreviated get., where the section splits into separate lines; the number of parts may be given (“3 fach geteilt”, “4fach geteilt”). It lasts until nicht geteilt, unis. or a single line resumes.
Abbreviations: get.
The German divisi: players split by desk or by stand partner to play separate notes. Dividing thins each line, so a divided section sounds lighter and more transparent than the same notes played by everyone — ideal for soft chords, weaker for powerful ones. Say how many parts and, if it matters, how to divide; always mark the return to unison.
Mahler, Symphony No. 5, first movement, cellos, m. 181: “geteilt.” with “3 fach” at pp; they return to “unis.” at m. 187.
Geteilt is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
