The remaining half of a divided section.
Printed over a divided string part where the remaining players enter or change technique (the other half, the other half naturale); it holds until tutti or all.
Also spelled: the other half
Use it to bring in the rest of a section in stages, building by numbers rather than by dynamics, or to give each half its own technique. Say what the other half plays (the same notes, another line, normal bowing), and mark the moment the full section reunites.
Holst, The Planets, “Mars, the Bringer of War”, cellos and basses, m. 25: “the other half naturale”, eight bars after “only half”, before “tutti, naturale” at m. 29.
Other half is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
