Half the section ("only half").
Printed over string parts (half, only half, the other half) to split a section into two groups of players, usually by desks; it holds until tutti or all. Where div. gives each group different notes, half may keep both groups on the same notes but ask them to play or bow differently.
Also spelled: only half
Halving a section thins the sound and allows two groups to play contrasting material or techniques. Say which players form each half (outside or inside players, front or back desks) if it matters, and mark where the full section returns. In parts, print the other half’s instruction where it enters, so both groups are covered.
Holst, The Planets, “Mars, the Bringer of War”, cellos and basses, m. 17: “only half”, then “the other half naturale” at m. 25 and “tutti, naturale” at m. 29.
Half is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
