Glowing.
Printed over a phrase, often in parentheses in Lieder (“(glühend)”), to colour that phrase; it lapses at the next character word or when the phrase ends.
Also spelled: gluehend
Glowing, ardent — intense warmth rather than force, the German neighbour of ardente. It asks for a rich, burning tone and full commitment to the line, and works best from mf to f, where intensity can grow without strain. In parentheses, as Wolf prints it, it is a passing flare inside the phrase rather than a new section.
Wolf, Mörike-Lieder, “Auf einer Wanderung”, m. 27: “(glühend)”, in a song headed “Leicht bewegt”.
Glühend is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
