Ardent, burning; with fervour.
Printed in a part beside the dynamic, or attached to a tempo word in a heading. It is a character word with no cancelling counterpart; it holds until another character or tempo direction takes over. French scores print the cognate ardent in the same places.
Ardente asks for burning intensity — a full, urgent tone and forward-leaning phrasing — and usually lives at f or above, though it can colour a passionate p. It overlaps with appassionato and con fuoco: choose ardente for the glow of feeling, con fuoco for fiery speed and attack, con calore for warmth without urgency. Add a dynamic and, if you want the tempo to press, say so separately.
Ardente is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
