Briskly, with dash.
Printed above the staff as a word of tempo and character, often intensified (“sehr flott”), at the start of a section; it stays in force until the next tempo word.
Brisk, smart, with dash — a colloquial word implying a quick, buoyant tempo and crisp rhythm, more casual in tone than lebhaft or rasch. It suits march-like or popular-style music and lively song endings. As a tempo word it is imprecise, so add a metronome mark if the speed matters.
Wolf, Eichendorff-Lieder, “Seemanns Abschied”, voice, m. 55: “sehr flott”, straight after a poco rit.
Flott is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
