Flute-like; bowed lightly over the fingerboard for a hollow, airy tone.
Printed above the string staff at the passage it governs, usually with a soft dynamic. It lasts until ord., naturale, or another bowing or contact-point word restores normal playing.
Also spelled: Flautato
Flute-like: a light, fast bow over or near the fingerboard, giving a soft, airy tone with little core. It overlaps with sul tasto, which names where the bow plays, while flautando names the sound; flautato means the same. Use it at soft dynamics for veiled colours, and cancel it clearly when the normal sound returns.
Flautando is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
