Felt mallet.
Printed over a timpani or percussion part as “mit Filzschlägel(n)” where felt-headed sticks are wanted; it lasts until another stick direction.
Also spelled: Filzschlegel
Felt sticks are the normal, warm-toned timpani sticks, so the instruction matters most when returning from wooden or other special sticks, or on suspended cymbal and tam-tam, where felt gives a soft, swelling stroke. Felt produces a round tone with a clear but gentle attack; hardness varies, so add weich or hart if it matters.
Filzschlägel is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
