Sticks with felt heads.
Printed over timpani or percussion parts (felt sticks, soft felt sticks) where the change of beater applies; it holds until another beater is named.
Also spelled: felt stick
Felt sticks give a round, warm attack and are the normal choice for timpani and for rolls. Changing from wooden to felt sticks softens the attack without lowering the dynamic. Allow time for the change, and name the beater again if an earlier passage asked for something else.
Holst, The Planets, “Mars, the Bringer of War”, timpani 1, m. 57: “felt sticks”, replacing the “wooden sticks” printed at m. 1.
Felt sticks is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
