First time: the ending for the first pass.
Printed over the first-ending bracket (often just 1. or 1. Mal) or in a direction that applies only on the first pass. It applies to that bracket or pass only; on the repeat the second ending or second-time instruction takes over.
Also spelled: 1. Mal
Volta brackets save writing out repeated music with different endings; the German words appear mostly where a repeat varies — a dynamic, an instrument or a tempo the first time only. State the second-time alternative explicitly so the difference is clear.
Erstes Mal is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
