With wire brushes.
Printed over a snare drum, cymbal or drum-kit part at the passage to be played with wire brushes; it lasts until sticks are called for again. Sweeping strokes are often shown with a circular line or described in words.
Brushes give a soft, swishing sound — light taps or a continuous sweep — borrowed from jazz and dance-band drumming. They suit intimate textures and blend well with plucked bass and piano. Notate taps as normal notes and describe any sweep separately; the sound will not carry over a full orchestra.
Con spazzole is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
