Wire brushes used on the drum.
Printed over snare-drum, cymbal or drum-kit parts (brushes, with brushes) where the player switches to wire brushes; it holds until sticks or another beater is named.
Also spelled: with brushes
Brushes give a soft, swishing sound and are central to jazz and light music; they can be struck or swept in circles across the drum head. Use them for gentle, sustained rhythm. Say whether swept or struck if it matters, and allow time to change beaters.
Brushes is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
