How does a block realization become music?
Passing tones, neighbours and anticipations opening block chords into an idiomatic texture — taught by worked model rather than rule, as the tradition taught it.
Diminution by passing tones: the block realization is full of thirds, and the worked model fills each one with the step between — motion added without one harmony changing.
Passing diminution in minor: the tenor carries the walking line this time, and the soprano moves only where its block tones stand a third apart.
Diminution by neighbors: each held block tone steps off to the tone beside it and returns on the weak beats — decoration that goes nowhere, on purpose.
Neighbor diminution in minor, where the raised tones constrain the ornaments: the leading tone’s neighbors are chosen so no line brushes an augmented second.
Diminution by anticipation: at each bar line the soprano sounds its next tone a quarter early — the suspension’s mirror, borrowing the future where the ear already knows it.
The corpus’s last exercise: a minor cadence with the whole toolkit in one model — an anticipation at the join, a passing descent into the suspension, and the tonic touched early at the close.
