The convention

Quarter-tone and microtonal accidentals (SMuFL's full quarter-tone/Sagittal glyph sets) exist in the broader notation ecosystem but are not part of standard tonal/modal pedagogy.

What goes wrong without it

N/A -- no current or planned Gradus content (species counterpoint, chorale harmony, fugue, modes, figured bass, roman-numeral analysis, ear training, kid mode) requires microtonal content.

Authority

SMuFL 'Microtonal and Sagittal accidentals' section documents the vocabulary; not addressed by Gould/Read/Ross, whose scope is common-practice and 20th-century Western notation.

How it is checked

This rule can be decided from pitches, durations and voices — no layout required. A validator can check it before anything is drawn.
