Hyphens between syllables use a single centered hyphen glyph, not double dashes

The connecting mark between syllables of one word is a single short hyphen, centered in the horizontal gap between the two syllables' lyric columns — not a full-width dash, not a double hyphen, and not omitted when the gap is wide. Some house styles print a run of short hyphens across a very wide gap (Finale and Dorico both support this), but never a plain en/em dash.

Author-typed lyric text contains a literal double hyphen ('--') or an em/en dash (— / –) as the syllable-continuation mark, which some renderers would pass through as extra text glyphs instead of applying engraving spacing logic.

Gould; Read. SMuFL has no dedicated lyric-hyphen glyph — engraving software draws it as a positioned text/line element, conventionally a centered hyphen (U+002D).

This rule needs the notated content and the rendered result together — the score says what should happen, the page says whether it did.
