Gradus GE-318 · cite this code — it is permanent. Rule id lyric-word-interrupted-by-rest
When a rest falls between two notes that would otherwise carry one continuous melisma, the extender line stops at the last sounding note before the rest and does not extend into or across the rest. If the interrupted word continues after the rest, the hyphen (or continuing extender) still applies at the syllable immediately before the rest, exactly as it would at any other syllable boundary — a rest is not itself a valid melisma-extender terminus with special silent-continuation behavior.
A melisma's authored span crosses a rest note-index with the renderer drawing one unbroken extender line straight through the rest's column, visually implying the syllable is 'held' through silence, or the hyphen before a continuing word is dropped because the rest was treated as the end of the lyric-bearing region.
Read (word underlay is governed note-by-note; Gould's extender-line rule implies the same boundary condition, since an extender is drawn 'over several notes' — a rest is not a note.
This rule needs the notated content and the rendered result together — the score says what should happen, the page says whether it did.
