When one or more notes of a beamed group extend into ledger-line territory while others in the group sit on or near the staff, the beam's slant and the stem-length rule together must keep the beam stroke itself clear of every ledger line the group's extreme notes pass through. This is a straightforward corollary of the general beam-slant and stem-length engraving rules (see the Beaming chapter and the Stems and Flags chapter) applied at the specific case of a group whose outer note is ledgered.
A beamed run whose highest note sits 3 ledger lines above the staff, where the beam's computed slant brings the beam stroke down close enough to visually intersect the topmost ledger line of a neighboring note in the group.
Ross, The Art of Music Engraving, Beaming chapter, discusses beam placement over ledger-line extremes as a case requiring the beam to sit clearly outside the ledgered note's stem-extension zone. Gould treats beam slant primarily through the noteheads-inside-the-staff case and does not give the ledger-extreme case separate treatment; this chapter follows Ross as the more specific authority here.
This rule needs the notated content and the rendered result together — the score says what should happen, the page says whether it did.
