Women’s voices of a chorus.
Printed as a staff label or above a choral staff (Women, Women’s voices) where only the upper voices sing; it holds until Men, All or Tutti.
Use it to divide a chorus by voice type for contrast, text emphasis or a lighter scoring. Women’s voices alone give a light, bright texture; specify further divisions (sopranos, altos, S. I, S. II) if the lines split. Mark clearly where the full chorus returns, and give the men a cue or a pitch reference before they re-enter after a long rest.
Women is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
