Struck with a metal beater.
Printed over a percussion part where a metal beater is to be used (with metal striker, metal beater); it holds until another beater is named.
Also spelled: metal striker
A metal beater gives the brightest, hardest attack on bells, triangle or cymbals, with a strong clang. Use it for climaxes and for tolling that must cut through a loud orchestra. Allow time to change from softer beaters, and expect the sound to ring long.
Holst, The Planets, “Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age”, tubular bells, m. 77: “With metal striker” at fff, in a bar where the woodwinds are marked pesante.
With metal striker is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
