Little bow: use only a short portion of the bow.
Printed over a string part at a quiet or delicate passage. It lasts for the phrase or until another bowing word (viel Bogen, gewöhnlich) replaces it.
Little bow means slow bow speed over a short length of hair: a soft, intimate, sometimes slightly veiled tone that is easy to control at pp. It is the opposite of viel Bogen. Use it for hushed sustained notes and delicate accompaniments; on long notes it lets players hold without changing bow, which keeps a soft line seamless.
Wenig Bogen is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
