The violin section.
Labels the two violin sections’ staves — Violins I and Violins II (or 1st and 2nd Violins) on the first system, Vlns. I and II after. Divisions within a section are marked div. and cancelled by unis.; a passage for one player or desk is cancelled by tutti.
Abbreviations: Vlns., Vlns
Treble clef at sounding pitch, from the G below middle C upward. The firsts usually carry the melody and the high register; the seconds supply harmony, counter-lines and rhythmic figures, so give them music worth playing. A full section blends and projects, but every division thins each line, so balance divided chords against the winds accordingly.
Violins is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
