Variation.
Printed as the heading of each variation (Var. I, Var. 2, Variazione III), numbered in sequence after the Tema. Each heading covers its variation; Maggiore or Minore may be added when the mode changes.
Abbreviations: Var., Var
A variation keeps something of the theme — its harmony, phrase structure or melody — and changes the rest, and the sequence should build or contrast. Classical sets often vary the figuration; Romantic sets transform the character more freely. Number every variation, and keep the theme’s phrase lengths unless the departure is the point.
Mozart, 12 Variations on “Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman”, K. 265 (“Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”), m. 25: “VAR. I.” directly after the 24-bar theme.
Variazione is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
