Original tempo.
Printed above the staff to restore the opening tempo of a movement or song after one or more changes; it holds until the next tempo word.
Also spelled: Urspruengliches Tempo
Original tempo — the tempo of the opening, equivalent to Tempo I and Erstes Tempo. Use it when several tempo changes intervene and Voriges Zeitmaß would be ambiguous; it is unambiguous by design, so it suits long movements with many episodes. Some composers write Hauptzeitmaß for the same purpose; whichever you choose, keep to one term within a work.
Ursprüngliches Tempo is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
