Restlessly moving.
Printed as a heading above the first bar, sometimes with an Italian or English equivalent (Agitato; “With restless emotion”) beside it; it holds until the next tempo word.
Restless motion — agitation expressed through tempo and figuration. It suits songs of anxiety or longing with an unsettled accompaniment. The tempo can be moderate; unrest comes from syncopation, rising sequences and unstable harmony, so the heading describes a character the music must already support.
Franz, Sechs Gesänge, Op. 26, “An den Wind”, voice, m. 1: “Unruhig bewegt”, printed with the Italian “Agitato”, at mf.
Unruhig bewegt is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
