The brightest and most commanding brass voice: fanfares, climaxes, rhythmic attack and, with valves, melody across about two and a half octaves from written F-sharp3. It also has a wide palette of mutes — straight, cup, harmon — each needing time to put in and take out. Write for B-flat or C trumpet (many professional orchestras play C, bands and schools B-flat), give the player rests, and keep long high passages rare.
Trumpet is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
