Defiant.
Printed above the staff as a character word, sometimes in a heading with a tempo word, or over a single phrase that should sound defiant. It lasts until another character word replaces it.
Trotzig asks for defiance: firm, stubborn accents and a set jaw rather than speed or rage. It suits obstinate repeated figures and a melody that refuses to yield to the harmony around it. It is a word of the German Romantic song and piano repertoire with no exact Italian equivalent — deciso and risoluto each catch only part of it — so add a dynamic and let the rhythm carry the stubbornness.
Trotzig is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
