Three strings (soft pedal off).
Printed between or below the piano staves where the soft pedal is released, cancelling une corde (or sourdine); it stays in force until the soft pedal is called for again.
Trois cordes restores the full piano tone after une corde. Place it where the change of colour should be heard — usually at the start of a phrase or at a crescendo — since the release itself makes a slight difference in sound. French scores may instead use the Italian tre corde, or sans sourdine and enlevez la sourdine.
Trois cordes is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
