Triangle.
Labels the triangle line (Triangle, Tri. or Trgl. later), written on a single line. Tremolo strokes ask for a roll, played inside one corner; an open circle or a + over a note distinguishes ringing from damped strokes, and l.v. lets it ring.
Abbreviations: Tri., Trgl.
A bright, high, unpitched ring that cuts through a full orchestra even when played softly, so a little goes a long way. Brahms uses it in only one movement of his symphonies, the Allegro giocoso of the Fourth, and Liszt’s First Piano Concerto gives it a famous solo. Write exact rhythms, mark rolls clearly, and avoid long stretches of continuous ringing.
Triangle is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
