At a comfortable, unhurried pace.
Printed above the staff as a heading, or as comodo alone after another tempo word (Allegro comodo, Andante comodo); it lasts until the next tempo indication. The older spelling commodo also appears.
Also spelled: comodo
Comodo means “comfortable”: a pace that sits easily for the players and never feels pushed. It tempers another tempo word gently — Allegro comodo is a relaxed allegro — or, as Tempo comodo, leaves the choice to the performer’s sense of ease. Use it when naturalness matters more than an exact speed, and avoid it where an ensemble needs a definite tempo to lock together.
Tempo comodo is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
