Tambourine.
Labels the tambourine line (Tambourine, Tamb. later). Tamb. is ambiguous across languages — it also abbreviates tamburo (drum) and the French tambour, the side drum — so confirm it against the full name on the first system. Single strokes are plain notes; a shake roll is written with tremolo strokes, a thumb roll in words.
Abbreviations: Tamb.
Struck with fingers, knuckles or fist, shaken, or rolled with a moistened thumb along the edge of the head, the tambourine brings dance and festivity. Specify the technique when it matters; fast rhythms are often played between knee and hand. A loud shake covers more than you expect, so in soft music prefer single taps and a light touch.
Tambourine is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
