Printed as “simile” or “sim.” after the first bar or two of a pattern has been fully marked — articulation, bowing, pedalling (“Ped. simile”) or accents. It lasts until the figure changes or a fresh marking appears; “sempre simile” reinforces it over a long stretch.
Abbreviations: sim.
Write detailed articulation for the first bar or two, then mark "simile" to indicate the pattern continues. This saves notation space and is clearer than writing the same markings over and over. Performers understand to continue the established pattern.
Chopin, Nocturne in E-flat major, Op. 9 No. 2, m. 2: “Ped. simile” — go on pedalling the accompaniment the same way — with “simile” printed again at m. 10.
