Very calm.
Printed as a heading, sometimes in parentheses beside a tempo word (Langsam, Sehr ruhig), or mid-song where a passage should become still; it holds until the next tempo or character word.
Very calm — a statement about stillness and evenness as much as speed. Strauss, Wagner and Webern use it to clear the surface for a voice or a soft texture. Keep the accompaniment simple enough that calm is possible, and add nicht schleppend if a slow pulse might lose its line.
Strauss, Morgen!, Op. 27, No. 4, voice, m. 14: “sehr ruhig”, in a song headed “Langsam” and “sehr getragen”.
Sehr ruhig is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
