Very moderate.
Printed as a heading above the first bar, or extended (Sehr mässig bewegt); it holds until the next tempo word. Older editions spell it mässig.
Also spelled: sehr mässig, sehr massig
Very moderate: keep the tempo deliberately restrained, toward the slower side of Mäßig. Wolf and Wagner use it for songs where the text and harmony need room. Because a restrained tempo can sag, pair it with a warning (aber nie schleppend) or a metronome mark.
Wolf, Eichendorff-Lieder, “Der Musikant”, voice, m. 1: “Sehr mässig” heads the song.
Sehr mäßig is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
