Strongly brought out.
Printed above the one part that must lead, typically a brass or string line inside a full texture, often at f or above. It holds for the phrase.
The strongest of the hervortretend family: this line is the Hauptstimme and everything else should make room. In full textures it tells the player to project with weight and the conductor where to balance. Use it sparingly, and support it by thinning or softening the competing parts — a marking cannot do all the work of orchestration.
Mahler, Symphony No. 5, first movement, Vier Trompeten in B., m. 195: “sehr hervortretend”, amid f and ff dynamics.
Sehr hervortretend is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
