Full of yearning.
A heading word, usually after the tempo word it colours (“Langsam und sehnsuchtsvoll”), printed above the first staff of a movement or song; it may also mark a single yearning phrase. It governs until the next tempo or character heading.
Sehnsucht — yearning for what is absent — is a central Romantic idea, and the marking asks for a line that reaches: slow, sustained, with tension carried through long notes and suspensions rather than released. Beethoven’s heading for the slow movement of Op. 101 is the model. Pair it with a slow tempo word and a soft-to-moderate dynamic, and let harmony and phrase length create the reaching rather than piling on hairpins.
Beethoven, Piano Sonata No. 28 in A major, Op. 101, third movement: headed “Langsam und sehnsuchtsvoll”, with the Italian “Adagio, ma non troppo, con affetto” beside it.
Sehnsuchtsvoll is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
