Bell down: lower the bell to its normal position.
Printed over the same parts where the bells-up passage ends, cancelling Schalltrichter auf; often left out when a rest or a soft dynamic makes the return obvious.
Write it wherever the raised-bell sound must end at a precise moment, especially if the next phrase is still loud and players might keep their bells up. Lowering the bell at once mellows and softens the sound, which can itself be an expressive effect.
Schalltrichter ab is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
