Collected, inward.
Printed above the staff or over a part, usually at a very soft dynamic. It sets an inward, meditative manner for the passage until the next character marking.
It asks for recollection in the spiritual sense: inward, concentrated, prayer-like playing with quiet, even tone and nothing showy. It suits moments of reflection or reverence; Boulanger uses it as the music sinks from p to ppp. Debussy’s song title Recueillement shares the root. Pair it with a dynamic, since recueilli describes attitude, not volume.
Boulanger, Clairières dans le ciel, “Nous nous aimerons tant”, piano, m. 27: “recueilli”, at pp, two bars after “en dehors”, with ppp following in the next bar.
Recueilli is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
