Ratchet.
Labels the ratchet (Raganella) on a single line. Its rattle is written as a sustained note, often with tremolo slashes or a wavy line showing how long the handle should be turned.
A cog wheel turned against a wooden tongue gives a loud, dry rattle — comic, mechanical or grotesque in effect. Strauss gives it to the pranks of Till Eulenspiegel. Treat it as a sound effect for a particular dramatic moment, since it has no pitch and little dynamic subtlety; mark how long each rattle lasts.
Raganella is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
