May be played or omitted.
Printed above a passage, note or repeat (optional, optional repeat) to mark that it may be played or omitted; it applies only to the marked passage.
Use it for passages that depend on the forces available or on performance length — an extra instrument, a repeat, a cadenza — and make sure the music works both ways, in harmony and in proportion. In editions, optional markings may be an editor’s suggestion, so distinguish them from the composer’s own text, and say what happens if the option is not taken.
Schumann, Myrthen, Op. 25, “Sitz’ ich allein”, piano, m. 25: an editorial note in English, “Repeat is optional”, is printed by this edition.
Optional is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
