Clean, clear.
Printed above the staff or beside the notes it affects, often with a qualifier (très net) or as the adverb nettement. It applies to the figure or passage marked until a contrary articulation word appears.
Net asks for clean, precise execution: exact rhythm, clear attacks and releases, no blurring by pedal or bow. It is less about shortness than sec and less about weight than marqué — the point is definition. Use it for figures that might smear (fast repeated notes, dotted rhythms, scales under pedal), and clear the pedal marks under it so the instruction can be obeyed.
Net is one of 1755 terms in the Gradus musical dictionary: the words, abbreviations and instrument names that appear in printed scores, plus the vocabulary composers use to talk about them.
